Latin America’s Economies Surge Forward - Simon Romero - NYTimes.com

NYTimes.com, Simon Romero, Lima, Perú, 30/06/2010, extracto/excerpt.-

While the United States and Europe fret over huge deficits and threats to a fragile recovery, this region has a surprise in store. Latin America, beset in the past by debt defaults, currency devaluations and the need for bailouts from rich countries, is experiencing robust economic growth that is the envy of its northern counterparts.

Strong demand in Asia for commodities like iron ore, tin and gold, combined with policies in several Latin American economies that help control deficits and keep inflation low, are encouraging investment and fueling much of the growth. The World Bank forecasts that the region’s economy will grow 4.5 percent this year.

Brazil's presidential campaign: Falling in love again with the state | The Economist

Brazil's presidential campaign: Falling in love again with the state | The Economist: "For all the rhetoric, the election is unlikely to alter fundamentally the balance between private enterprise and the state in Brazil. The government lacks capital to build roads, ports and airports, and will continue to look to the private sector to do so. When Ms Rousseff is not praising Brazil’s state companies she often talks about the need for partnerships between the state and the private sector. And some believe her running mate might be Henrique Meirelles, the orthodox governor of the Central Bank.

But there is plenty of evidence that Lula, who many expect would remain the power behind the throne if Ms Rousseff were to win, himself now believes that a bigger role for the state in the economy would be good for Brazil."

Fuente:: 21/02/2008 El comercio, Lima

Brazilian president vows to boost Antarctica operations during visit - International Herald Tribune

Brazilian president vows to boost Antarctica operations during visit - International Herald Tribune

SANTIAGO, Chile: "Brazil intends to increase its operations in Antarctica, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Sunday after visiting the region with his wife, son and several government officials. "We are going to have to expand our presence here with more investments and laboratory ships," Silva told reporters covering his trip, which was postponed 24 hours by bad weather. "We will also have to improve the base and bring in more researchers.

Silva visited his country's Commandante Ferraz Antarctic base, which is marking its 25th anniversary. Brazilian scientists there conduct meteorological, ocea nographic and biological studies, as well as research involving nuclear geophysics and geomagnetism.

He also made stops at the Brazil Antarctic Program's main support vessel, the "Ary Rongel," and at Chile's Eduardo Frei base.
Presidential spokesman Acir Pimenta Madeira said bad weather also delayed Silva's return flight late Sunday to Punta Arenas, Chile's southernmost city, from where he was to continue on to Brazil."
